July 18-20, 2008: BreyerFest 2008

The theme of BreyerFest 2008 was Global Gallop, and SFG's Gypsies and Drum, who hail from the British Isles, fit in perfectly. BreyerFest is an annual event dedicated to the model horses manufactured by Breyer Animal Creations since the 1950s. Typical attendance is 5,000 enthusiasts per day, and many stop by the barn to visit the guest horses who participate in demos throughout the weekend.

SFG took Silver Pearl, Silver Phantom, and Harley. Also participating was Villa Vanners, who showed its gorgeous stallions--the palomino Romeo, the buckskin Taskin, and dapple gray Drum Killians Irish Red.

July 11-12, 2008: The Equine Extravaganza

SFG attended the North Carolina Equine Extravaganza (Raleigh, NC) with Belladonna Farm, Mountain View Vanner Ranch, and Villa Vanners. SFG's representative was the lovely Silver Pearl, who participated in the Gypsy Horse Association's demos, took many walks through the vendor area, and flirted with Belladonna's handsome Romeo son Cash Man in Red.

While strolling through the vendor area, Pearl was enchanted by a small toy horse.

May 2-4 , 2008: National Gypsy and Drum Horse Classic

Silver Feather Gypsies started its show year with the prestigious National Gypsy and Drum Horse Classic, held at that bright jewel, the Kentucky Horse Park (Lexington, Kentucky). Representing SFG were Silver Pearl, Silver Phanton, and Harley. Although Pearl and Phantom acquited themselves well in the Gypsy halter classes, Harley was SFG's star performer. Competing against such renowned Drum stallions as Chewmill Guiness, King Rocky, Killians Irish Red, and Radison, Harley was Supreme Champion Drum of the National as well as Champion Drum Stallion.

Harley performed well in the under saddle classes, winning 6 blue and 3 red ribbons. Among his firsts was Gypsy & Drum Dressage Suitability - Open, Drum Hunt Seat Pleasure, Gypsy & Drum Hunt Seat Pleasure, and Walk/Trot Pleasure Drum - English - Open. Of particular pride was Harley's performance in the Training Level dressage Test 1, in which he and Lisa scored a 70%.

The show contained many bright moments. One such was friend Robin Hale's 1st in the Gypsy Color class with GSF Glenfiddich, whom she had just taken delivery of. Glen, Robin's first Gypsy, represented the culmination of a 5-year dream for her.

Another was the debut of Bootleg Express's new colt, the appropriately named Nobility.

SFG would like to compliment the National Gypsy Horse Show and Faire Association for the quality of its show and congratulate all particpants and their horses.

December 2006: Open House, Black Forest Shires & Gypsy Horses

In December, the year ended with a special treat for us. In what we hope will be an annual tradition, Black Forest Shires & Gypsy Horses held an Open House at its new Wildcat Ranch in Colorado. There were seminars, horses, demos, door prizes, horses, wagon rides, socializing, horses. Here, Jeff Bartko of BFSGH is shown with one of their outstanding mares, Dinah, who is pulling a Gypsy dray.

In true Gypsy fashion, horses were shown tied up in BFSGH's huge indoor arena for persusal by attendees. BFSGH stated that 139 horses were available for purchase at the event. At the very last minute, a shipment of extremely high quality weanlings from the Vine Farm arrived, and many of these sold very quickly.

October 15, 2006: Feathered Horse Classic

The Georgia National Fair hosted the Feathered Horse Classic for the very first time in 2006. Dedicated to feathered breeds, it featured Friesians, Gypsy Horses, and Drum Horses. SFG's Silver Belle, Silver Phantom, Victor Tango ("Tizer"), Padparadshah ("June Bug"), and Feather Dancer ("Harley") attended. Some highpoints: Harley won a bunch of blue ribbons in under saddle classes and also 1st place in the Stallion at Halter class. SFG took both Reserve Championships—Harley in Versatility and Tizer of the entire show. Details follow below.

Making his debut was SFG Silver Phantom, shown above, then a five month old.  Phantom is Silver Belle's 2006 foal by Gypsy Gold's BB King. Phantom has two silver eyes and promises to be absolutely gorgeous. Phantom placed 1st in the Colt/Filly class, competing against six other youngsters.  Photo © Stunning Vision Photography

Also attending the Feathered Horse Classic was Harley, shown here competing in one of several under saddle classes. He won a plethora of blue ribbons (1sts) and a scattering of reds (2nds). Photo © Stunning Vision Photography

These 1sts and 2nds added up to Harley's winning the Feathered Horse Classic's other Reserve Championship. While Tizer was Reserve Champion of the show, Harley took Reserve Champion Versatility. The Feathered Horse Classic combined classes for Drum Horses and Gypsies. The Champion Versatility was Mariah Farm's DF Chalk Talk, another Drum Horse.

August 11-16, 2006: Ohio State Fair Gypsy Vanner Horse Show

For the second year in a row, SFG enjoyed the warm hospitality of the Ohio State Fair.

* In his first show, Silver Belle's gorgeous bay and white nephew Victor Tango placed 2nd in the Stallion under 3 Years Old class and 3rd in the Carriage class competing against seasoned adults.

* Attending were Padparadshah, BWS Feather Dancer, and Victor Tango, of whose performance we are very proud. As Silver Belle had done the year before, Padparadshah was Reserve Champion Mare. Unlike Silver Belle, Padparadshah entered the Championship Mare class by placing 2nd in the Mare under 3 Years Old class. In total, she competed against 17 other mares of all ages to win Reserve Champion.

* Competing in the first ever Drum Horse classes, which were sponsored by the American Drum Horse Association, BWS Feather Dancer placed 1st. Although impressive, Feather Dancer's real triumph occurred afterwards, when he and Trainer Lisa Baker greeted their public. For several hours following the last class, members of the public lined up in front of his stall to meet and lay a hand on him.

June 17, 2006: John Steven Hockensmith Exhibit at the International Museum of the Horse, Kentucky Horse Park

For two years, John Hockensmith traveled with a prominent family to Appleby Fair, a horse fair held each June in the town of Appleby in Great Britain. He organized his photographs in a stunning book entitled Gypsy Horses and the Traveler's Way. The Kentucky Horse Park held an exhibit of his photos; SFG's owner Mary Graybeal and friend and colleague Toni Tidwell (TNT Sport Horses) attended.

March 17-18, 2006: Tennessee Volunteer Fair

For the first time, the Tennessee Volunteer Fair featured Gypsy Horses, and SFG's Storm King and Padparadshah were in attendance. Organized by Valerie Peppers (Cosmopolitan Farm), the event was relaxing, well organized, and fun. We look forward to 2007's TVF.
